THE POSTGRADUATE Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) has procured 21 new dental chairs to upgrade its infrastructure, said officials on Monday. Dr K Gauba, professor and head of Oral Health Sciences Centre, PGI, told Chandigarh Newsline that the institute has installed new dental chairs to make patients more comfortable. “The number of such machines is over 40 at the institute now,” he said.

PGI doctors said that a separate OPD room has been created inside the oral centre, where eight such chairs have been installed. “The OPD will be in a separate room now. The upgradation will help to deal with the huge rush of patients,” said Dr Gauba. The PGI, which is north India’s premier medical hub, has been recording a huge rush of patients on daily basis. Doctors at the oral centre say the rush of patients is also growing and thus there is a need to upgrade infrastructure at the institute. Currently, with the huge rush of patients, the waiting list for appointment is also long. On Monday, several patients said the institute should upgrade the centre with modern facilities.

“They are providing the best treatment. But, the waiting period is long,” said Ram Kumar, a family member of a patient. “The administration should take steps so that the waiting period for appointments is reduced.”

The PGI doctors, however, say that over the years, as the number of patients has increased, upgradation of facilities has not worked. “Even if we add more facilities to the centre, the patient number continues to rise every year,” said a doctor. PGI has recorded a rise in patients from across the country. According to hospital records, In 2015-16, over 24 lakh patients visited the OPD in 2015-16, while last year, PGI recoded over 25 lakh patients.
