LAUREL, Miss. (WDAM) - Laurel Middle School students are entering into the world of dentistry.

Ten students were accepted into the S.M.I.L.E. U Dentistry Camp Cohort 2 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

“I’m very excited because it will open up new doors and new opportunities for me to learn more medical fields other than just dentistry,” said Klaire Pearson, seventh grader.

Students will get hands-on experience and educational sessions at this summer camp.

In those sessions they’ll learn functions of the dental field along with vital skills for public speaking and professionalism. The camp also will offer guidance when it comes to choosing a career path.

“We think that it’s very important, as do they think it’s very important, to start students very early to connect them with the institution so they can understand and know what it takes to get into dental school,” Laurel Assistant Superintendent Dr. Michael Eubanks said.

The S.M.I.L.E. U program encourages students to participate in S.T.E.M. classes and helps with admission to health programs.

Laurel students will fill 10 of the 40 slots at the camp.

“It’s an honor to be in one of the forty slots because not everybody gets to go and it’s an opportunity,” said Cade Whitlock, seventh grader.

Students accepted:

  • Asia Wilson
  • Cade Whitlock
  • Jakira Page
  • Josie Watts
  • Kaleb Rhodes
  • Klaire Pearson
