The National Economic Empowerment Fund (Neef) has asked pastors to be good examples by paying back the loans they get from the fund.

Neef’s Chief Excutive Officer, Humphrey Mdyetseni, spoke during a meeting with church leaders in Blantyre. He said pastors should start small businesses to improve their lives and should make sure to repay the money they borrow.

“Pastors have a big influence in their communities. If they pay back their loans, others will learn from them and do the same,” he said.

Mdyetseni said only about 60 out of every 100 pastors are repaying their loans properly.

Pastor Douglas Maulana, who looks after the loan program in the southern region, said problems like the inflation and the poor economy are making it hard for pastors to repay the loans.

So far, pastors have received a total of K7.5 billion in loans from Neef.
