A Lebanon woman has pleaded guilty to TennCare fraud in a Rutherford County courtroom.
The Office of Inspector General investigated TaTrayanna Edwards, 31, for a three-year period where officials say she lied about having custody of her three children to receive TennCare benefits.
The Tennessee Department of Finance & Administration said if Edwards truthfully reported her household composition, she would have been deemed ineligible for TennCare benefits.
On Wednesday, May 21, Edwards stood before a judge and pleaded guilty to one count of fraud.
Edwards was sentenced to five years of supervised probation and ordered to pay full restitution of $14,585.42 to the Division of TennCare.
“Instances such as these are mostly preventable, as long as truthful information is being provided by potential TennCare recipients when applying for benefits,” Inspector General Chad D. Holman said. “Misrepresenting the accurate composition of a household leads to the misappropriation of taxpayer funds. In this instance, the expenditures were made for someone who was not eligible to receive them.”
Rutherford County District Attorney General Jennings Jones prosecuted Edwards’ case with the assistance of Assistant District Attorney Ashley Chisum Hall.
